What is rabies?

Rabies is an acute infectious disease of the central nervous system caused by the rabies virus. It is a kind of infectious disease with high mortality of both human and animal (zoonotic).

Human rabies is usually caused by an infected (or infected) animal (dog, cat, mouse, fox, bat, etc.) biting or scratching the skin of the human body. The virus travels from the wound to the local muscle to proliferate, then travels up the nerve bundle to the ganglion, and finally reaches the central nervous system. Once onset, 100% die.

After a person has rabies, the clinical manifestations will be mania, fear, fear of wind and water, salivation and pharyngeal muscle spasm, eventually occur paralysis, life-threatening. After infection with rabies virus, it usually takes 2 to 8 weeks to develop the disease, and the elderly can reach more than one year.

Which animals can transmit rabies virus?

Rabies virus is mainly transmitted by dogs and cats, in addition to wild animals (mice, monkeys, bats, etc.) and other domestic animals (pigs, cattle, etc.).

Rabies vaccine

Is it still useful to get rabies vaccine more than 24 hours after a bite?

The sooner you get the rabies vaccine, the better. If vaccination is not timely due to various reasons, the rabies vaccine should be reinoculated as soon as possible before the onset of disease (no matter how long it is before exposure to rabies).
